- COVER: THE DOOR · A story about a door. · Forty-eight RSVPs. Seven at the door.
- 02/10: The preparation had taken weeks. Lehenga. Chandeliers. A WhatsApp group with forty-seven members. The largest Diwali party their building had ever seen.
- 03/10: The RSVPs had been immaculate. “We are coming with the children. We are thrilled.” “We wouldn’t miss it. You are the best neighbours.”
- 04/10: The caterers arrived at four. The decoration team at three. She had been up since six. She repositioned the marigold garlands twice.
- 05/10: By eight, the space was ready. Perfect lighting. Perfect music. Flowers on every table. She stood by the door in her new sari, waiting.
- 06/10: At ten-thirty, the bell had not rung for forty-five minutes. She walked to the corner of the hall and raised her phone. From that angle, the room looked full. She took three photographs.
- 07/10: She checked the WhatsApp group. A flurry of excuses at nine-forty-seven. Family emergency. Fever. Traffic. A child’s tantrum.
- 08/10: Each excuse was polished. The RSVPs had said forty-eight. The door had registered seven.
- 09/10: The caterers began packing the remaining food. The chandeliers still sparkled. The music still played. She held a plate of starters for guests who were not coming.
- 10/10: The photographs went up at eleven. Forty-one people liked them. Six of them had said they were coming.
