  1. COVER: THE UNSPOKEN ACCORD · A story about a shadow. · Forty-one years on the veranda. The shawl arrived without a word.
  2. 02/10: Evening settled across the balcony. Two wicker chairs. One tea tray. Forty-one years.
  3. 03/10: No smartphones. No music. No conversation. The house behind them was dark. The servants had left for the night.
  4. 04/10: They had lived there through parents buried, children married and a city that had grown from a quiet town into concrete pressed against the sky.
  5. 05/10: A cool breeze arrived carrying rain and distant dust. The shadow of the opposite building lengthened across the tiles.
  6. THE TELL: Without a word or a glance, they moved at the same time. He steadied the edge of her chair. She drew a woollen shawl over his shoulders.
  7. 07/10: Neither checked whether anyone was watching. No photograph was taken. The gesture belonged entirely to the dark veranda.
  8. 08/10: They had survived the dinners, the registries, the inheritances. The breeze returned. The shawl stayed.
  9. 09/10: He did not thank her. She did not turn around. The chairs faced the dark, as before.
  10. THE MIRROR: No one saw it happen. The veranda held it anyway. Some things don’t need a witness to be completely true.
