  3. 03/10: His father moved him from table to table with aggressive pride. “He manages a portfolio larger than our entire city budget.”
  4. 04/10: The son stood straight, offering precise corporate anecdotes. He looked accomplished. Unassailable. A model of global success.
  5. 05/10: Later, the crowd thinned. He returned to the old family home and climbed the stairs to the small room under the terrace where he had once studied for entrance exams.
  6. THE TELL: He reached for the brass handle. His hand stayed there for twelve seconds. The chipped paint had not changed.
  7. 07/10: The promotion. The foreign city. The title. None of them reached this far.
  8. 08/10: Thirty-four years old. Earning more in a year than the house was worth. He kept his hand on the chipped paint until it warmed.
  9. 09/10: His father called from the landing. “Beta, the neighbours are here. Bring down the photographs of your flat.” The son closed his eyes. “Coming, Papa.”
  10. THE MIRROR: Downstairs, his father was already describing the view from the London flat. Upstairs, his son stood in the dark with his hand on a door that was already open.
